Japan Supports Solar Power in Alebtong through the Grant of USD 159,511
Today, the Embassy of Japan is to hand over three projects of JPY 12.920 million (approximately US$ 159,511) for Installation of Electric Facilities in Alebtong District: firstly for the St. Teresa Girl’s Secondary School (50,658USD), secondly for the Omoro Health Centre (49,759USD) and thirdly for the Amugu Health Centre (59,094USD).
H.E. Junzo Fujita, Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, will officiate the commissioning of these projects.
Alebtong District is situated in Lango region of Northern Uganda, a new district carved out from Lira District in 2010. Northern Uganda was heavily inflicted by LRA insurgencies over 20 years producing around 2 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and destructing social infrastructures. Since 2006, security in the region has been improving and the resettlement of IDPs is progressing. However, reconstruction of the public infrastructure is yet to be improved. Lango region where the project is located is one of the most heavily affected regions by the conflict in the northern Uganda.
St. Teresa Girl’s Secondary School promotes girls’ education as the only boarding secondary school in Abako sub-county. There is no stable electricity available in the area, thus the students are put in a difficult situation for their studies and living. This project has installed solar panels and related electric facilities, which will improve the learning and living environment for 366 students at the school.
Omoro and Amugu Health Centres are the only health centres in Omoro and Amugu Sub-Counties respectively, which provide 24 hours medical services for the community. As the Sub-Counties lack electricity, the centres are faced with many problems in lighting and sterilization of medical equipment. The projects have installed solar panels and related electric facilities, which will improve the medical services at the centres, benefiting more than 14,000 people in the community.
The donation by Japan is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Embassy of Japan to support community development projects to uplift the lives of the people at the grassroots level. So far, a total of 181 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.
Japan, steadily promoting the ownership of and the partnership with African countries through the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting quality growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidating peace and good governance in Africa.
